To verify your space meets safety standards, we always schedule tests after surface installations or repairs, but before your final walkthrough. After that, we typically recommend scheduling annual tests to ensure everything stays safe, especially after busy seasons or severe seasonal weather.
ASTM F1292 and ASTM F3351 are the standard methods our certified technicians use to conduct playground surface impact testing. ASTM F1292 establishes the critical fall height, the maximum height from which a child can fall without exceeding injury thresholds. ASTM F3351 is the test method we use at specific fall heights to verify that a surface continues to meet those impact attenuation requirements. Together, they confirm that areas around playground equipment, such as climbing walls, slides, and swings, are properly cushioned against falls. It allows us to determine the critical fall height (the height at which a serious injury can occur) of different playground equipment, such as climbing walls and swingsets, and ensure the surrounding area is properly cushioned.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in its Public Playground Safety Handbook (Publication No. 325), provides national safety guidelines that reference ASTM standards as the benchmarks for compliance.
